Here’s how to properly hand a phone down so it works well for its next owner, not just for you.

Start With a Clean Slate

Before the phone goes to anyone else, it needs a full reset — not just deleting a few apps.

• Consider whether they need a phone number and SIM at all, or if the phone will mainly be used over Wi-Fi for now.

For parents or grandparents:

• Simplify the home screen — fewer apps, larger icons, and only the essentials (calls, messages, camera, maybe one or two apps they’ll actually use).
• Increase text size and enable accessibility features like magnification or bold text if needed.
• Save your own number and a couple of key contacts directly into their phone before handing it over, so they’re not starting from zero.
• Walk them through the basics in person once — how to answer a call, how to charge it, how to reach you if something goes wrong.

Check the Phone Is Actually Fit for Purpose

Not every old phone is a good hand-me-down. Before passing it on, consider:

• Battery health. A phone with a battery that’s degraded significantly will frustrate a new user fast, especially a parent who isn’t used to charging a phone daily.
• Software support. If the phone can no longer receive security updates, it’s a real risk, especially for a parent who may not know to watch for scam messages or dodgy links.
• Physical condition. A cracked screen or worn charging port is a bigger deal for a first-time user who doesn’t have the muscle memory to work around it.

If the phone doesn’t meet a reasonable bar on any of these, it may be worth having it looked at and repaired first, or considering a newer device instead of passing along something that’ll cause more frustration than convenience.

Keep a Line Open for Support

The handover doesn’t end once the phone is set up. Whether it’s a child figuring out how texting works or a parent who forgets their passcode in week one, plan on being available for a few follow-up questions in the first weeks. A short “how’s it going with the phone?” check-in a week later goes a long way.
